Steve Jobs Resigns...And?Date: Wed, 14. September 2011 08:11:07

If recent news is to be believed, the stock market took a massive hit when Steve Jobs announced his resignation from Apple. The last figure I heard was $52 billion! Yes, all that money, gone. Wiped out. And all because one man is stepping down.
But should investors really be so panicked? Look at the evidence.
Jonathan Ive will still lead the way with product design and development, and he's skilled to say the least. A British native, he's been working closely with Jobs since the late nineties. Hmm, that rings a bell. Ah yes, the iPod was launched in 2001, designed and created by none other than Ive. And let's face it, before the iPod came along, Apple was a niche computer platform used mainly be designers and artists. Since then, Apple's music products have helped them take over the electronic world, but although their laptops and computers are growing in popularity, they're still too pricey and niche for the mainstream audience. It's the iPhone, and now iPad, that people want from Apple. And those all came from an Apple under the direction of Ive.
The new CEO, Tim Cook, didn't come out of nowhere either. He's effectively been running Apple for quite a while, having been with the company for 13 years. And he's considered to be one of the brightest minds in his field.
So, why the fuss? Really, Jobs has always been a master of marketing. He's smart to be sure, but he's all about the presentation. He will be missed, most definitely. He's an icon, a figurehead, a legend in his own right. But his illness has taken a lot out of him in recent years, and Apple has been running on the steam of other people. People who are now in charge.
Don't worry. The iPhone 5 launches in October, followed by iPad 3, and then a breakthrough will come like the iPhone. One that will make Apple's stock soar, again. This is merely a tiny drop in a very steep climb for Apple.Steve Jobs Resigns...And? originally appeared on About.com Advertising on Thursday, August 25th, 2011 at 12:34:58.Permalink | Comment | Email this
Russian Regulators Block Google Online Advertising AcquisitionDate: Mon, 27. October 2008 15:04:53
An anonymous reader writes "Russian regulators will not let Google buy a local online advertising company, halting a $140 million deal agreed to in July. Google had planned to acquire Zao Begun, which has a search and contextual video and text advertising business. Begun is owned by Rambler Media, a Russian company that own various Web sites and runs a search engine. Google said it is reviewing the decision of Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) and hasn't decided how to react. Slashdot has previously covered some of the issues surrounding Google's muscle in the advertising market."pa href="http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/27/0127245amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=08/10/27/0127245"/a/ppa href="http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/27/0127245amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Bin Laden Is Dead...But He Still Lives On In AdsDate: Tue, 31. May 2011 08:08:04
I've seen quite a few ads featuring the infamous Osama Bin Laden over the last ten years. He's been out there selling everything from cars to condoms, although something tells me the advertisers never sought permission. What a great coup that would have been, to have him lawyer-up and pull a cease and desist on Durex or Land Rover.
Anyway, I figured his death would put an end to the ads, but not at all. Advertising is always topical, it borrows from our culture and gets the most play when it can do it in a funny or controversial way.
Screen grab courtesy of YouTube
Which brings me nicely to this ad, which you can see right here. I won't spoil the punchline, but it's a killer. Bold idea to say the least, but it's for a good cause and not trying to attach Bin Laden to something trivial.
For those of you interested in a little "Bin Laden in Advertising" history lesson, here's a round up of ads featuring the most hated man since Hitler. Personally, I'm all for making a joke of the man, dead or alive. Ridicule is a great way to remove his power, which he hopefully won't have more of as a martyr.
Condoms, Land Rover, Halls and more.
